LATIN ADDRESS OF WELCOME

Si vos, o matronae (viros interim non adloquor), quae edidit hospes noster opera ordine perlegatis, unus certe hie index oculos omnes detineat, animos erigat, " de cute hiberno tempore curanda." hoc statim vobis occurrere ausim augurari : " o rem mirabilem atque insperatam ! exstititne tandem e nostra schola Sheffieldiensi qui vere rem gravissimam aestimaret, nostram speciem feminarum ? aliquando apud nos, quae toties hie talibus temporibus adfuimus, ita contionabitur hospes ut simul oblectet, simul id quod poeta quidam scripsit confirmet,

' cura dabit faciem, fades neglecta peribit' ? "

TRANSLATION OF THE LATIN ADDRESS

The ladies in the audience (if the gentlemen will forgive me), if they were to study a list of the works written by our guest of honour, would undoubtedly pause, intrigued, at one typical and significant title, " The Care of the Skin in Winter." Their thoughts, if I should venture to read them, might well be : " Is it possible that King Edward's has at long last produced someone with a true appreciation of that most important subject, women's appearance ? After attending so many Speech Days, are we now to have a speaker who will entertain and enlighten us with practical advice on beauty treatment ? " Certainly, when at school, our guest of honour won the prize for Chemistry, and Chemistry is closely related to the practical science of beauty, but the truth is revealed by another title in the list, " Dermatology in the Steel Industry." Alas ! ladies, our guest of honour is an expert in industrial diseases of the skin.

The gentlemen in the audience (if the ladies will forgive me) are well aware that Sheffield never hesitates to aid with her abundance of natural ability the less fortunate regions in England, even in the South. This is particularly true of our guest, who applies nationally, as a member of the Industrial Medical Council of the Coal Board, the experience which he gained in Sheffield industry. He also serves an international community, as a member of the Working Party on Dermatology to the European Coal and Steel Community,

Which of you, ladies and gentlemen both, does not know that not only do Sheffield and the nation thrive by industry but also they evince the warmest of concern for the health of those who work in industry ? That humane tradition is aptly symbolised for us today by our guest of honour, whose presence is a reminder how often the talented sons of Sheffield and King Edward's return to their native city laden with honours.

Henry Renwick Vickers, M.D., F.R.C.P., we are most happy to greet you and eagerly await, if not hints on beauty treatment, at least some words of inspiration and edification.

=================

French Poem                                                      " Former Life "

Long have I lived beneath huge portals, coloured by marine

suns with a myriad fires ; at eve, the majestic pillars made

the scene like vast basaltic caves.

The breakers, rolling onwards the reflected skies, mingled,

in solemn mystery, the powerful strains of their rich music

with colours of the sunset in my eyes.

There did I live in voluptuous calm, amid sky, waves,

splendour and naked slaves, drenched in fragrance.

They would fan my brow with fronds of palm ;   their

only charge was to increase the pain of secret grief in

which I languished.

German Anecdote                                                                                    " The Wily Merchant "

A merchant sailing home from a successful Eastern voyage is planning how to spend his fortune, when—bang!—a shot announces Algerian pirates in the offing. That is one of the risks ; the high sea is good place for this sort of thing. A Sicilian sailor has known Algerian slavery already, so to him the merchant turns and gives instructions. All but the Sicilian go below. As the pirates sail close, he pleads with them to take him off the ship—there is Plague aboard ! The pirate captain loses his handkerchief in his confusion and steers to windward ; of his kindness he passes over a bottle of spiced vinegar on a long pole and sails off. All reach home safely, the merchant builds a castle and makes the Sicilian his steward for life.

THE SCHOOL SONG

ille verus Edwardensis, quisquis humani nihil
a sese alienum putabit, usque consors ceteris
sive gaudebunt secundis seu laborabunt malis.

strenuus labore mentis, corporis non neglegens,
omnium sententiarum perspicax inquisitor ;
semper artium bonarum pervicax videbitur.
