Alan Hughes

Alan Hughes, KES 1957-64

I left Hunters Bar Primary in 1957 with a scholarship to KES.

From KES I went to Queen's, Oxford, to read physics in 1964.

I worked for a year as a physicist after graduating (with Aluminium Laboratories, Banbury, part of the Alcan group), then joined the staff of the Oxford dictionaries in 1968 as a science editor on the Supplement to the Oxford English Dictionary (4 vols., 1972-86). I subsequently worked on the Shorter Oxford English Dictionary (new editions in 1993 and 2002). I retired in 2011 from the staff of the Oxford English Dictionary (http://www.oed.com), of which a third edition is being prepared which will probably double its size (the second edition occupies a mere 20 volumes).

I am married to Freda and we have two sons, Alistair, b. 1992, and Kenneth, b. 1995; we live in Oxford on land once owned by the Morrells (of local brewery fame).

I remember my KES days with great affection - much more so than my undergraduate ones - and I appreciate the creation of a website covering this period.
