TRANSLATION OF LATIN SPEECH OF WELCOME

As an institution of diverse and novel character strives to express its unity, is it not fitting for me to retain a lauded tradition of old? This I do in welcoming our speaker this evening in the fashion of my predecessors.

At a time of transition we look forward to the guidance of a voice from Olympus that speaks with experience and revelation. For our guest is Professor of Education in the University of Sheffield where for a quarter of a century he has built a flourishing reputation and disseminated the written and spoken word afar.

Leaving Cambridge University as a young historian of the past and later experiencing the life of a schoolmaster, he has developed a sympathy for the sciences and now interprets the future for both cultures. Science fiction is indeed being transformed into an intellectual discipline.

I am reminded of the example of the Elder Pliny, a man of universal interest, member of the College of Augurs, and writer of prolific output, who considered every moment lost which was not devoted to study. But when we hear of the censure of his nephew who ‘wasted his time walking’, the comparison ends.

Our guest, a keen walker and gardener, would, I suspect, be more sympathetic to the peripatetic lectures of Aristotle’s Lyceum, where pleasant gardens adjoined the banks of the Ilissus. Here it was that the eminent philosopher first observed: ‘In modern times there are opposing views about the practice of education. There is no general agreement about what the young should learn in relation to virtue or the best way of life, nor is it clear whether their education ought to be directed more towards the intellect than towards character’. Such a heritage concerns all gathered here and not least our speaker.

Walter Harry Green Armytage, Professor of Education, I have the honour to extend a warm welcome and Invite you to address your willing audience.
