"iamque migrant cives austros aquilone frequentes:
hos tamen expediat mox remigrare domum".
As we recollect that tonight’s Guest of Honour is a most dis-tinguished Professor of History, we are bound also to remember many sayings about history and historians, some of them obviously true, others less obvious but provocative. There is an almost irresistible temptation to make our historian the subject of a brief history and to test some of those sayings by his own career; who can blame us if we yield?
Our duty as impromptu historians is to locate our subject in time and place. In our first historical scene let us imagine the place to be King Edward VII School, the time - here I spare the susceptibilities even of a male historian - several years ago. We find him active and successful in every sphere of school life and, by his prowess as a batsman, disproving utterly the saying, "The life of the historian must be short and precarious ". After a distinguished departure from school, as the phases of his career varied in time, so they varied greatly in place. A brief list is sufficient - as pupil, Oxford and Paris - as teacher, Liverpool, Oxford and Manchester. There is a common saying, "The drift from North to South must be reversed"; our historian has already personally reversed it, for twice he has returned from South to North, suiting the place to the time of his career and the time to the benefit of an ever widening circle of students.
He has shown his ability not merely in time of peace but also in time of war. He has proved abundantly true the saying, "War makes rattling good history ", for it was he who, serving in the Air Ministry, wrote the pamphlet, "The Battle of Britain ", which recounted in stirring words the heroic exploits of those who preserved our freedom in aerial combat. He has always, like a true historian, had a feeling for time and place; tonight he has most persuasively shown this feeling in being here now to address us.
Albert Goodwin, M.A., we greet you most cordially and welcome you to your native city. Your career has amply proved that "Histories make men wise"; we now ask you to prove by some words of guidance that historians can make boys, parents and even masters a little wiser.
